The Solomon is blessed with having both a north and south swell making it one on the most swell friendly destinations on earth. Situated in Melanesia and part of the Coral Triangle which has the highest marine biodiversity in the world. The Hapi Isles has seen surfers for over 25 years however annual numbers are still around 1000 due to local infrastructure, airports and accommodation. What’s that mean for you- NO CROWDS and the chance to find new waves with naming rights. Not many place left in the world who offer this.
Surfing the Solomons offer much more than your typical surf trip with culture steeped in time, 100 of languages, over 900 islands. Here you’ll experience crystal clear water, amazing untouched reefs and beaches, world class fishing, ancient tropical rainforest and empty reef breaks barreling around isolated atolls.
South Side
Slightly less consistent southerly swells from the Coral Sea reach south facing islands including Gizo and Skull island. Tropical depressions, cyclones and lows in the coral sea and off the coast of Queensland and Western Pacific can generate swell from the east and south making the Western Province the place to hit.
Northern Side
The best season for waves is November thru to April when the North Pacific lights up. Long period ground swells regularly hit exposed north facing coasts including Malaita, Santa Isabel and Makira. The same swells which hits Hawaii reach the Solomons about a week later at reduced size and very long period. Swell is usually 3 to 6 feet but can be bigger up to 10 foot at its peak, for many it’s time to search for those inner reef breaks that turn on with the extra swell. Typhoons off Japan and Philippines also produce great quality waves at reduced size and very long period. Swell is usually 3 to 6 feet but can be bigger.
