Unfortunately there are now only a few places left on earth where primitive tribal cultures are still intact and the traditional ways of living are still practiced. Sumba is one of those special places where stone graves, traditional houses and the rituals of the animist religion have been well preserved. The funeral ceremonies still continue and huge blocks of stone are still cut and dragged by hundreds of men to the mortuary grounds. Various numbers of livestock are still the only acceptable bride wealth of these villages and many still do not allow missionaries or native preachers to enter. "My second visit! Here you have the best chance in Indonesia of catching all kinds of big fish with a very experienced captain. The sea around Nihiwatu provides fishermen with a great range of game fish as well as reef fish for sport or table. Game fish include the famous Marlin and Sailfish, Tuna, Spanish Mackerel and Wahoo. Large Marlin in the 600 to 1,000 pound range have been hooked and lost by professional sport fishermen vacationing at Nihiwatu. Diving We are fortunate to have a choice of diverse dive sites within minutes of the resort. Further afield, heart-pounding adventure diving on undersea mountains is available under the guidance of our experienced dive guides. The excitement is guaranteed. Masses of large pelagic fish congregate on the seamounts and divers have even experienced close encounters with large Marlin and Sailfish. Our dive center is fully equipped and our western dive instructors are ready to offer introductory dives and dive certification courses. The visibility can be affected by large surf that generally occurs on the full and new moons, therefore the best dive conditions are the periods before or after the moon cycles. Surfing Guests of Nihiwatu have the added benefit of having one of the world's more challenging surfing waves directly in front of their cottages. Nihiwatu faces south into the Indian Ocean and therefore the surf here is very consistent. If the surf is flat at Nihiwatu you can be sure it is flat everywhere else in the archipelago. During the months of April to November Nihiwatu provides world-class surf, only a stone's throw from your bungalow. Many professional surfers have visited Nihiwatu over the years and several surf movies have been filmed here featuring 1999 world surfing champion Mark Occhilupo. If you are seeking large double overhead surf the best times are during the months of May to September on the full and new moons. In between those times we often have perfect waves in the three to six foot range. Boating Expeditions We can take you to spectacular areas that are so remote that they can only be accessed by boat. The megalithic culture of this area has remained intact and virtually unchanged through time. There have been many television documentaries aired recently on the "Discovery" and "National Geographic" channels featuring this unique tribal culture. The world famous "Pasola" ritual that involves battles on horseback takes place in February and March of each year and is held very close to the resort. Weaving Sumba is world famous for its traditional "ikat" cloth. We offer traditional weaving lessons in the resort and also in the villages. Guests can take their cloth home with them when finished. Overland Tours and Village Visits We offer many half day and full day jeep tours to important traditional villages and marketplaces. Tours are customized according to guests' interests. A visit to a Sumba village is one of the most interesting things you can do during your stay. Our policy is to take no more than six guests at any one time to a village. We believe that this provides a more intimate experience for guests and does not overly disturb the village life. The Village Life Experience Our guests can spend a full day in specially selected small traditional family villages.
