Most Yachts depart Bungus or Muara harbour 1700 hrs (approx) on date of departure and return 0800hrs (approx) on date of return.

By sailing over night to/from the Mentawais, you will surf/cruise a full 10 days and be charged for 11 nights. In this way you pay for only ONE night in transit to the surf zones.

(Check the fine print before you compare our prices with so called 12 day packages. Most 12 day packages are in fact 10 days surfing and 2 days transit. ie 11 nights.)

We use quality boats with safety gear only

There are a small handful of Mentawai vessels that what I would say comply to Australian standards for Surveyed Passenger vessels, are run very professionally with Western crew and have the required certification to run commercial vessels. Could operate in Australia without a problem.

*There are 1/3rd plus that are safe, mostly Western vessels that carry life saving equipment, life rafts, flares, have 2 way radios etc. Probably lack a fare amount of maintenance and in some cases run by unqualified skippers. Not overly professional.

*Then there is the rest that are mostly local boats that I would think twice about going up a river on, are unsafe, don't have any life saving gear and radios / electronics that are lucky to be working.

For any of our clientele my advice would be to do their homework, select a boat that has the capability to move in any weather, safely and unrestricted to move distance by the size of its fuel tanks. You can almost guarantee that half of your time you can have breaks to yourself or with one other boat only. Definitely they will see much much more of the Mentawai's and possibly be able to go North to Tanah Bala and Telos. This also means that time wont be wasted getting fuel or water. In other words an 11 night trip means 10 full days surfing.

What should I take with me?

You are travelling on a yacht with a group and while there is lots of space for everyone, stowage on board is finite and there is no point in dragging along all your Bali shopping etc.

Travel light.

Two pairs of shorts, 2 T shirts and one set of light cotton long sleave/long leg gear will do.

No need to bring a big wardrobe. If you need formal clothing for other sectors of your trip, please consider leaving as much as you can with our office staff in Padang.

What time of year is the surf best?

The Mentawais get surf all year round but in common with Bali, the biggest and most consistent surf hits the islands in mid April and backs off in late October.

Biggest months are usually July & August but intense storms in the southern Indian ocean can send big swell to the area as early as April and as late as November.

January and February can produce excellent 3ft surf at many of the right-handers so if you are into learning to surf (or re-learning) consider our 20% discounts for Mid November till Mid March.

How experienced do I need to be

Our captains take pride in finding you and your friends the best waves on the day to suit your level.

Most Mentawai surf breaks are coral reef bottom but the variety and range of wave types is extraordinary. Some of the barrel sections are as perfect & challenging as any in the world. (E-Bay, HTs, Iceland & Mainu).

Others peak and then barrel in two or more sections (Thunders, Lances Left, Maccas) and others are fat and fun with a fun pit at the shoulder and long walls. (Pit-stops, Chubbies, Nipussi, Burgerworld)

Most have a workable shoulder or fat section for the less extreme surfer. No matter what you ride you will have a ball. Raw beginners may find themselves watching the group from the shoulder but if you are serious about improving your surfing you will be rewarded.

As with quality surf anywhere, skill + fitness = safety in the water = enjoyment.

30% deposit to secure booking with balance due 90 days prior to departure.

Unsecured bookings will be held for 7 days or until required by other clients.

Demand for prime time is heavy and it is recommended that bookings are made and deposits paid to avoid disappointment.

There possibly isn't another place on Earth where you have a realistic possibility of surfing the best waves of your life on any given day.
